The ClarinetFest 2011 was a wonderful event and it was a pleasure to attend a number of performances and meet with the performers. Some of the highlights for me include Michele Zukovsky, E. Gerard Errante, Eric Mandat, Derek Bermel, Sergio Bosi, Stephan Vermeersch, Hakan Rosengren, Chad Burrow, Mathias Muller & Friends, and Eddie Daniels.

I will be attending the International Clarinet Conference August 3-7 2011 at California State University, Northridge, CA. Julia Heinen and William Powell are the hosts, and their combined experience and choice of direction for the conference should prove to be a great experience.
I have not been back in the Los Angeles area for years, and I look forward to the trip and the opportunity to visit with colleagues and friends, and participate in the world of the clarinet and it's current state of artistry.

Two of my young woodwind students (flute and clarinet) studying with me privately went to state competitions this year, 2011. I think it was especially good for them because it was their first time at a competition performance, and they proceeded to the state finals. Nice work!

12-15-10Curriculum Writer / World Music - History of Rock and Roll
I recently completed the designing/writing of two new online courses (World Music / History of Rock and Roll) for Grantham University (Kansas City, MO). It was interesting to revisit, read again, and research these areas while setting up the courses.
Also, it was a pleasure to fulfill two curriculum projects that were appreciated by the management, and completed on a relatively short deadline. Quite a few busy evenings during the Fall semester!

Earning my doctorate from UCLA makes me very pleased to be a part of that highly respected institution of higher learning. The 2010 World University Rankings placed UCLA at #11 right behind Yale University, and ahead of other top notch institutions such as University of Chicago, John Hopkins University, Cornell University, University of Michigan, Columbia University, and University of Pennsylvania. Great news for us alumni!

I look forward to working with a former colleague on the upcoming Kansas Jazz Collective performance at BC on September 29; vibraphonist Eldad Tarmu. I first met Eldad in Los Angeles years ago, and it will be great to have him with us for the performance.

01-23-10Paper Presentation / CMS Great Plains Chapter Conference 2010
I look forward to presenting at the 2010 College Music Society Great Plains Chapter Conference March 27-28, 2010.
The conference will be held at Emporia State University (KS) and I will present in the music theory discipline; "Ligeti's Chamber Concerto for 13 Instrumentalists" as a characteristic work of 20th century textural music, and how it can successfully be used in the undergraduate music theory core curriculum when exploring 20th Century music.

The Benedictine College newspaper "The Circuit" recently published an interview with me in the October 30th edition. The interview acknowledged my recent ASCAPlus award, activity as a faculty member, composer and performer, the November recital with Pezzone, and my plans for the future. The world's leading jazz site, allaboutjazz.com, gave recognition to my work in jazz by celebrating my July birthday with a"Jazz Musician of the Day" accolade. It was a pleasant surprise to say the least, and I appreciate the support very much.
My thanks go to Michael and the crew at AAJ, and all of those folks who have taken an interest in following and supporting my work in jazz music. There will be more jazz projects to come, most definitely; I'm not finished yet! Check my jazz site periodically.

04-03-09Adjudicator / CMS Conference Composition Award
I attended the Great Plains CMS Regional Conference April 3-5, 2009 at University of Missouri Kansas City, and adjudicated for the CMS student composition award. Three compositions from masters degree and doctoral degree students were performed in an evening recital, which included a work by composer Stephen Hartke who was a guest speaker at the conference.

VDM has completed the monograph book of my doctoral paper - A Study: An Analysis and Interpretation of a Late Twentieth Century Work for Saxophone and Piano: Steven Stucky's "Notturno". The paper is now commercially available through VDM Publishing.

I accepted a full-time teaching position at Benedictine College (KS). Relocating this summer '08 has been both a busy and enriching experience.
My load will include teaching music theory, composition, orchestration, chamber music, and the woodwinds applied studio (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone.). I will serve as the coordinator of the music theory program, and contribute to developing the B.A. composition degree. I look forward to all of it.
The background music on this site is recordings of live recital performances in Los Angeles. The pianist accompanying is Bryan Pezzone, and the works are by Samuel Adler, Charles Koechlin, and Steven Stucky.
